Genderf*cked

Statement

In this group exhibition, five queer Los Angeles-based artists insert the narrative that self-preservation is an integral component to overcoming adversity and building a robust foundation for prolonged activism. With featured works by Leo Alas, Manu Garcia, Shannon Hanson, Rhiley Jane, and Lo Lundeen, come varied portrayals of intimacy, identity, and the concept of refuge. Each uniquely developed body of artwork presents a profound declaration of authenticity; further creating ripples of nostalgia and tenderness.

The expression of queer joy thematically ties into the notion that joy is an active tool for resistance. Often in contemporary art, representation of queer intimacy comes in hand with grief due to the travesties the community continues to endure. The intent of this exhibition is to touch on the relevancy of this potent history, while also signifying the importance of unity and restoration for continued resilience. The living room aesthetic and zine library, created by queer publication Fruitslice, invites the audience to settle into a homely landscape of reflection and conjoined solidarity.

While confronted with the current political climate, the active mission to rebel remains pertinent as gender normatives, discrimination, and constrained binary pressures are propelled onto the queer community. GenderF*cked! rings in the clear reminder that perseverance, joy, and rebellion coexist. A part of this process is finding respite, lashing out, finding community, having a fun night…and getting back to work.
